My Face Your Face
Project Type
Acrylic and Watercolor
Date
2024-2025
As an artist, I’ve always believed that art should be a mirror that reflects the richness and diversity of our world. But more often than not, it feels like the mirror is broken—showing only fragments of reality, over-polished and homogenized into a singular image. Scrolling through social media, I’m disheartened by the relentless pursuit of a singular, uniform aesthetic - faces that all seem to blur into one idealized mold. This erasure of individuality and cultural uniqueness is both subtle and stark, and it fuels my resolve to do something different.
In this ongoing series of paintings, I aim to celebrate representation by painting different faces from all kinds of places. I want every viewer to feel seen, to look at a piece and recognize themselves in it - their face, their nose, their story, and the history of their people woven into the details of portraiture. Art should remind us that beauty exists in the spectrum, not the singular; that every feature, every line, every shade carries a story worth telling.
When I set out to find references for these portraits, I was struck by how often the depictions of people from underrepresented communities fell into clichés and stereotypes. Searching for inspiration, I found reductive caricatures rather than the nuanced, layered humanity I was looking for. This only deepened my commitment to create art that goes beyond these stereotypes - to represent people authentically and with the dignity they deserve.
Representation matters because it shapes how we see ourselves and each other. It is a powerful act of affirmation to see your identity reflected in the world around you. With these paintings, I hope to contribute to a broader conversation about inclusivity in art, and to remind us all of the beauty in our differences. This is my love letter to faces that refuse to blend in - faces that carry the weight of history, culture, and individuality, and a celebration of the infinite ways we can be human.
